While living at Walden Pond in July 1846, writer Henry David Thoreau was put in jail refusing to pay a tax he believed supported an unjust war, The Mexican American War, and slavery. He wrote an essay about it now called Civil Disobedience which influenced Mahatma Ghandi in India and Martin Luther King in America.
