Assistant to Head of Circulation Services

Hours: Full-time, 37.5 hours per week, evenings and weekends required.  Schedule alternates weekly:
Week 1: Monday – Thursday 9:00-5:00, Friday 10:00-6:00
Week 2: Monday – Thursday 1:00-9:00, Saturday 9:00-5:00 

Pay: $22.00 - $23.50/hr. 

The Prospect Heights Public Library District is looking for someone who is friendly, organized and collaborative to join our team as our Assistant to the Head of Circulation Services!  This position is ideal for someone with excellent customer service skills who will be a resource to staff and patrons in this public-facing role.

Primary duties and responsibilities include:

  • Assisting the Head of Circulation with day-to-day workflow
  • Acting as a liaison between staff members and the Head of Circulation
  • Maintaining working knowledge of the current ILS, hardware and software, and assisting in working with CCS and offsite computer technical support vendor
  • Making sound decisions based upon the understanding of Library and Department policies
  • Preparing and maintaining the work schedule of the Circulation Desk Assistants
  • Assisting Head of Circulation Services with interviewing, hiring and evaluating staff
  • Performing all circulation tasks, including but not limited to check-in and check-out functions of library materials and renewing items, issuing library cards to patrons and updating patron accounts as required, assisting patrons with questions and issues
  • Collecting fees for various library services and operating & balancing the cash register
  • Other duties as assigned

The ideal candidate will:

  • Have at least two years previous experience with library resources and services
  • Be able to lead and collaborate with other circulation team members
  • Demonstrate strong computer skills and enthusiastically adapt to changes in technology
  • Be a positive team player who treats patrons and co-workers respectfully and professionally
  • Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Be a creative problem solver who remains confident and calm during busy times
  • Have a friendly, service-oriented attitude

Qualifications/Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to read, write and communicate fluently in English
  • Frequently required to bend, stoop, kneel, crouch and reach various heights
  • Physical ability to stand for extended periods of time
  • Ability to lift and carry items up to 25 pounds
  • Ability to push/pull items of 100 pounds or higher while utilizing a cart
  • Ability to perform fine motor skills tasks
  • Visual acuity sufficient to read various font sizes
  • Bilingual in Spanish or other language(s) a plus
